Have you ever wondered how we take those ice measurements? It takes a dedicated (and brave) group of volunteers, a big inflatable red suit and the support of the YKFD. Each weekend during October and November this group spends several hours going out to each site on the map until the ice is at least 6' deep. A hole is drilled as far out as they can safely go at the time, and the ice thickness is measured. You can always find the results of their efforts here.
