Hi Trail Riders
There is a group in town organizing a Long John Jamboree for March 23, 24 and 25 . This will be a scaled down version of the Caribou Carnival. It will be held on Yellowknife Bay adjacent to the Snow King’s Castle. Lots of events for families.
MacLean’s Magazine is putting out a list of 99 Stupid things that government’s spent their money on. #2 on the list is the federal government providing money to snowmobile clubs in Ontario ($500,00) and Quebec ($6,000,000 over 3 years) for trail grooming and trail construction. To me this is ONE OF THE SMARTEST THIINGS the government has spent their money on. Snowmobiling in Ontario and Quebec is a huge tourist business. Any investment in the trail system would only increase revenues for the clubs and revenues to the Government through taxes. Snowmobiling is a 6 Billion dollar industry in Canada with approximately 650,000 registered snowmobilers. Do the math and see what the average snowmobiler spends per year then take say 30% of that for taxes on fuel, sales tax, income tax, etc. I’d say it is a good investment by the government. Anyway that’s my rant for the day.
We are working with the City of YK Employee’s Recreation Committee to organize a ride and food drive on Feb. 19. More Details to follow when final arrangements are made.
Next week is National Snowmobile Safety Week and we are planning a rally with SADD at the Fire Hall. 8 AM to 9 AM. We need a couple of sleds for an hour in the morning – any volunteers.
Tom G. has prepared Trail Maps that can be printed. I have a copy of his CD and I can forward it to any member who wants a copy. This is similar to our digital map but it is better quality paper print-out at 1:50,000. The maps can be taped together to make a larger map.
